The department analyzes biological materials and tissue samples to confirm or rule out oncologic diagnoses and to identify the molecular and genetic characteristics of each disease\u2014essential information for planning <strong>personalized treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multidisciplinary staff includes <strong>medical pathologists, biologists, radiologists, and laboratory technicians<\/strong>, who collaborate closely with surgeons, oncologists, hematologists, and radiation oncologists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department\u2019s activities are organized into several specialized areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Histopathology <\/strong>and <strong>Cytopathology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immunocytochemistry<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cytogenetics<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Molecular Pathology<\/strong> (on tissue and liquid biopsy) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Microscopic Diagnosis<\/strong> (histology and cytology)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Microscopic Diagnosis: Histology and Cytology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Histological and cytological diagnostics<\/strong> form the foundation of the department&#8217;s work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Examination of tissues and organs obtained via surgery, <strong>biopsy<\/strong>, or core needle biopsy. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analysis of cell samples from <strong>fine-needle aspiration<\/strong>, effusions, urine, sputum, bronchoaspirates, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and other specimens. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intraoperative diagnostics<\/strong> providing immediate feedback during surgical procedures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diagnostic counseling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The department provides <strong>in-depth diagnostic consultations<\/strong> for complex cancers, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/irccs.com\/en\/patologie\/breast-tumors\/\">Breast<\/a><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skin and soft tissue<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/irccs.com\/patologie\/tumore-di-testa-e-collo\/\">Head and neck<\/a><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/irccs.com\/patologie\/tumore-toraco-polmonari\/\">Lung<\/a><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gastrointestinal system<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urogenital system<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oncohematologic malignancies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The team also handles <strong>specialist cytology<\/strong> and with the <strong>diagnosis of cancers of unknown primitivity (CUP)<\/strong> &#8211; cancers whose organ of origin is unclear: using advanced techniques <strong>to identify the tissue of origin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biomarker Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Immunohistochemistry<\/strong> laboratory enables:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Detection of tumor-associated molecular <strong>markers <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assessment <\/strong>of <strong>prognosis <\/strong>and <strong>potential <\/strong>treatment <strong>responses<br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Genetic and Molecular Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The department is also a reference center for <strong>Cytogenetics <\/strong>and <strong>Molecular Pathology<\/strong>, providing advanced genetic and molecular analyses, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Detection of chromosomal alterations<\/strong> in leukemias, lymphomas, and solid tumors (e.g., using FISH).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identification of genetic mutations and gene fusions through <strong>Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)<\/strong>, critical for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy selection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluation of complex biomarkers via NGS, including <strong>microsatellite instability (MSI)<\/strong>, <strong>tumor mutational burden (TMB)<\/strong>, and <strong>homologous recombination deficiency (HRD)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detection of <strong>hereditary cancer syndromes<\/strong> (e.g., Lynch syndrome, familial polyposis, hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes) in collaboration with Medical Genetics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analysis of <strong>HPV viral DNA<\/strong> in relevant cancers (cervical, head and neck,
