In this field, <strong>scientific research<\/strong> is the key tool for <strong>understanding the disease and developing increasingly effective therapies<\/strong> for complex conditions such as cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to advances in research, <strong>cancer is less daunting today<\/strong>: many patients live with the disease for extended periods or achieve full recovery, even in forms once considered incurable. Major innovations include <strong>molecular targeted therapies<\/strong>, <strong>immunotherapy<\/strong>, and <strong>CAR-T cell therapies<\/strong>, which enable immune cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research extends beyond the laboratory<\/strong>: patients can participate in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/irccs.com\/en\/divisioni-cliniche\/clinical-research-unit-cru\/\">clinical trials<\/a><\/strong>, which provide safe access to innovative drugs and treatments before official approval. Each stage of research is conducted in <strong>full compliance with ethical, scientific, and regulatory standards<\/strong>, under the supervision of the relevant authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At least five types of cancer research<\/strong> can be distinguished, based on the goals pursued and the type of experiments conducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"block_69cfb5516832b\" class=\"colorbox-block acf-block\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"relative my-4 lg:my-8 p-4 lg:p-9 bg-blue-lighter\/10\">\n\t\t<div class=\"relative\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"text-blue-lighter mb-5\">Epidemiological Research<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"body \">\n\t\t\t<p><!-- wp:column {\"width\":\"33.33%\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p><!-- wp:column {\"width\":\"33.33%\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p data-start=\"30\" data-end=\"317\">Epidemiological research in oncology studies the <strong data-start=\"79\" data-end=\"95\">distribution<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"97\" data-end=\"110\">frequency<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"116\" data-end=\"132\">determinants<\/strong> of cancer within a population. work<\/strong> aimed at <strong data-start=\"129\" data-end=\"163\">expanding scientific knowledge<\/strong>\u00a0without an immediate therapeutic goal.<br data-start=\"203\" data-end=\"206\" \/>In medicine, basic research <strong>forms the foundation for all discoveries<\/strong>, investigating the mechanisms of cellular function and biological processes, often using biochemical, physical, or cellular models.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"432\" data-end=\"818\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">In oncology, basic research has enabled the identification of <strong>genetic alterations<\/strong> responsible for the uncontrolled growth of tumor cells\u2014known as <strong>molecular targets<\/strong>\u2014which have paved the way for many of today\u2019s most innovative therapies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"432\" data-end=\"818\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Studies initially conducted for other purposes often lead to unexpected findings, opening new avenues for therapeutic development and advancing cancer treatment strategies.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"block_69cfb5516839a\" class=\"colorbox-block acf-block\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"relative my-4 lg:my-8 p-4 lg:p-9 bg-blue-lighter\/10\">\n\t\t<div class=\"relative\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"text-blue-lighter mb-5\">Preclinical data-end=\"162\">preliminary efficacy<\/strong> of new molecules or treatments.<br data-start=\"193\" data-end=\"196\" \/>Any substance with potential therapeutic activity is first tested <strong data-start=\"262\" data-end=\"274\">in vitro<\/strong> (in cell cultures) and then <strong data-start=\"303\" data-end=\"314\">in vivo<\/strong> (in animal models) to study its effects within a complex organism.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"696\">This phase allows researchers to understand how a molecule is <strong data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"602\">absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated<\/strong>, as well as to determine its <strong data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"644\">toxicity<\/strong> and the most appropriate route of administration.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"927\">All preclinical testing is conducted according to strict international standards, known as <strong data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"823\">Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)<\/strong>, to ensure reliable results that can serve as a foundation for subsequent clinical studies in humans.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"block_69cfb551683d0\" class=\"colorbox-block acf-block\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"relative my-4 lg:my-8 p-4 data-end=\"203\">Translational research encompasses the <strong data-start=\"58\" data-end=\"76\">entire process<\/strong> of moving a basic scientific discovery into <strong data-start=\"129\" data-end=\"153\">clinical application<\/strong>, often including the <strong data-start=\"181\" data-end=\"196\">preclinical<\/strong> phase.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"205\" data-end=\"427\">Its goal is to transform findings from basic research into <strong data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"298\">clinically useful applications<\/strong> for the <strong data-start=\"307\" data-end=\"347\">prevention, diagnosis, and treatment<\/strong> of cancer\u2014a process often summarised by the phrase <strong data-start=\"399\" data-end=\"426\">\u201cfrom bench to bedside\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"429\" data-end=\"877\">This type of research helps<strong> reduce the time<\/strong> between scientific discovery and its practical application in medicine. While basic research generates new knowledge rapidly, translating these findings into effective therapies can take years. Translational research accelerates this process, enabling continuous updates to therapeutic strategies and the timely introduction of innovative approaches into clinical practice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"1193\">A key feature of translational research is its <strong data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1057\">bidirectional nature<\/strong>: patients are not only the recipients of new therapies but also a valuable source of information for research. <strong>Clinical observations, treatment responses, and unmet patient needs<\/strong> can <strong>generate new hypotheses<\/strong> and guide further studies and clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1359\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Translational research requires <strong data-start=\"1227\" data-end=\"1250\">close collaboration<\/strong> between<strong> laboratory scientists <\/strong>and <strong>clinicians<\/strong> to turn scientific results into tangible benefits for patients<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"block_69cfb551683f5\" class=\"colorbox-block acf-block\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"relative my-4 lg:my-8 p-4 lg:p-9 bg-blue-lighter\/10\">\n\t\t<div class=\"relative\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"text-blue-lighter mb-5\">Clinical Research<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"body \">\n\t\t\t<p>Clinical research studies and evaluates\u00a0the <strong>effectiveness<\/strong> and <strong>safety<\/strong> of new diagnostic procedures or therapies <strong>in humans<\/strong>. It can be divided into two main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Observational studies:<\/strong>\u00a0Collect data on interventions already used in clinical practice to analyze their effects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experimental (interventional) studies:<\/strong>\u00a0Assess new therapies, drugs, or devices to determine their safety, efficacy, and potential advantages over existing treatments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All clinical studies involves <strong>voluntary patient participation<\/strong>, after signing an <strong>informed consent form<\/strong>, which protects privacy and ensures a free and informed choice.<\/p>\n<p>According to guidance from <strong>AIFA (Italian Medicines Agency)<\/strong>, clinical research is conducted in four main phases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Phase 1:<\/strong> initial assessment of a drug\u2019s safety and tolerability in a limited number of volunteers or patients.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phase 2:<\/strong> evaluation of therapeutic activity and determination of the optimal dosage in a small group of patients. When feasible, a <strong>placebo <\/strong>(a substance with no therapeutic effect) may be used to compare results and objectively assess the effect of the investigational drug.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phase 3:<\/strong> confirmation of treatment effectiveness in a larger number of patients, often through <strong>randomised controlled clinical trials<\/strong>, in which participants are randomly assigned to receive either the new drug or a comparator treatment.
