Description
Patients under the Institute’s care may be offered oncological genetic counseling when indicated as part of their treatment pathway.
This service is intended for individuals or families in whom a hereditary predisposition to cancer is suspected. In such cases, inherited genetic factors may significantly increase the risk of developing specific types of cancer compared with the general population.
The primary objectives of counseling are to:
- Identify individuals at increased genetic risk of developing cancer
- Initiate personalized primary prevention strategies aimed at risk reduction and early detection through targeted screening programs, enabling diagnosis at earlier, more treatable stages.
Activities
During the consultation, the specialist collects the patient’s personal and family medical history, evaluates the appropriateness of genetic testing at specialized external centers, and, where a pathogenic variant is identified, develops a tailored surveillance and prevention plan, shared with the patient and, when appropriate, their family members.
The service includes:
- Comprehensive assessment of personal and family history to evaluate hereditary cancer risk;
- Clear explanation of genetic implications and possible test outcomes;
- Discussion of available genetic tests for the identification of cancer-associated hereditary mutations, with interpretation of results;
- Personalized risk management counseling, including recommendations for surveillance programs and preventive measures;
- Ongoing support and guidance for patients and their families, including decision-making related to prevention or treatment;
- Multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure integrated clinical and psychological management of the high-risk patient.
