Description
Thoracic Oncology Surgery at IRCCS Candiolo employs the most advanced techniques available for the treatment of thoracic malignancies, integrated within the multidisciplinary management of primary and secondary cancers of the lung. Other key areas of focus include mediastinal and chest wall tumors. Surgical care emphasizes a conservative approach, balancing optimal therapeutic outcomes with preservation of postoperative quality of life.
Other important areas of focus are mediastinal and chest wall cancer. Surgical activity is characterized by a conservative approach oriented toward ensuring therapeutic outcome and postoperative quality of life.
The Division is committed to providing rapid and minimally invasive diagnostic pathways, working closely with pulmonology and interventional radiology to ensure personalized patient assessment.
All clinical activities are part of the Lung Program, an integrated project bringing together all professionals involved in lung cancer care. Within this precision medicine framework, each patient receives individualized therapeutic strategies—including participation in international clinical trials—ranging from early-stage and locally advanced disease to metastatic lung cancer.
Enhanced Recovery Protocols
The Thoracic Oncology Surgery team applies the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Protocol, a multidisciplinary care model aimed at minimizing surgical trauma through minimally invasive VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) and robotic techniques. Working in close collaboration with physiotherapists and nutritionists, the protocol prepares patients physically for surgery, optimizes recovery, and significantly reduces morbidity and length of stay, which averages three days in Candiolo’s Thoracic Surgery Department.
Goals
The team adopts a patient-centered approach, combining cutting-edge techniques with individualized assessment. Key objectives include:
- Surgical safety and precision, supported by advanced instrumentation
- Reduced patient impact, minimizing postoperative pain and recovery time
- Optimal oncologic outcomes, coordinated with planned medical and radiation therapies
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Every patient follows a shared diagnostic and therapeutic care pathway (PSDTA), in which surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and anesthesiologists collaborate to define the most appropriate strategy from diagnosis through follow-up.
Clinical Research
Thoracic Oncology Surgery has a strong focus on research in four main areas: surgical techniques, molecular biology, chemo-induction, and ERAS protocol optimization. Current clinical trials aim to reduce complications and improve outcomes within precision medicine for pulmonary oncology, in partnership with the Clinical Research and Innovation Facility.
Ongoing trials include:
- E-Seal Clinical Trial
- Lucent Register
- Lovance Study
Research findings are regularly published in international scientific journals and presented at major conferences.
