Description
The Candiolo IRCCS Pharmacy plays a central role in the care of cancer patients, ensuring that drugs and medical devices are always available, safe and used as effectively as possible.
Activities
The activity focuses mainly on the personalized preparation of oncology drugs, especially antiblastic chemotherapeutics and supportive therapies, produced in high-tech sterile environments. About 76,000 preparations are made each year within a dedicated and fully automated laboratory (UFA – Antiblastic Drugs Unit), ensuring quality and precision at every stage.
In addition to sterile drugs, the Pharmacy also produces traditional non-sterile galenics, such as creams, solutions or mouthwashes, always with a doctor’s prescription, in compliance with official regulations.
Another key function is the day-to-day management of drugs and medical devices: the Pharmacy is in charge of procurement, warehousing and distribution within the wards, and the supply of drugs to patients at discharge or after the oncology specialist visit. This allows for therapeutic continuity at home as well.
The Pharmacy also participates at the forefront of clinical trials, managing experimental drugs and placebos, and ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) at all stages: from receipt to quality control, to delivery of drugs to patients and return to the study sponsor.
Careful supervision ensures proper management of drugs (including narcotics) and devices in each department. The Pharmacy is also responsible for Pharmacovigilance and Devicevigilance, and thus for monitoring and ensuring the safe use of drugs and medical devices, collecting reports from healthcare personnel and forwarding them to AIFA or the Ministry of Health.
- To support quality of care, the department produces regular reports on consumption and expenditure of drugs and devices, and manages the AIFA Registry of Oncology Drugs.
- Finally, the Hospital Pharmacy is also a training center: it offers daily and periodic updates to health care staff and patients and caregivers on the proper use of drugs and devices, and collaborates with the university on dissertations, residency training and research projects.
