Description
The Breast Surgery Unit at the Candiolo Cancer Institute is dedicated to the treatment of benign and malignant breast diseases, with the dual goal of removing the lesion and, whenever possible, preserving breast aesthetics to ensure optimal quality of life for the patient.
A Personalized, Multidisciplinary Approach
Each patient receives individualized care based on tumor characteristics, personal medical history, and individual needs and preferences. Treatment plans are defined and reviewed in multidisciplinary consultations, involving oncologists, radiation therapists, pathologists, radiologists, genetic counselors, psychologists, and surgeons at every major therapeutic step.
Decisions are made through ongoing dialogue between the patient and the medical and nursing team of the Breast Surgery Unit, promoting active patient participation in all therapeutic choices. Plastic surgeons collaborate closely with other specialists within the Breast Unit, ensuring an integrated, comprehensive approach from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.
Activities
- Minimally invasive conservative surgery: Tumor removal while preserving as much healthy breast tissue as possible
- Demolition surgery: Robotic or endoscopic mastectomy for more extensive disease
- Reconstructive surgery: Breast reconstruction, often performed concurrently with tumor removal
- Axillary surgery: Evaluation and treatment of axillary lymph nodes, crucial for accurate staging and treatment planning
The unit’s goal is to provide effective care that addresses both the disease and the individual needs of each woman, ensuring comprehensive attention to oncologic, functional, and aesthetic outcomes.
