Anesthesia and Resuscitation

Director: Dr. Alessandro Cerutti

Description

At the Candiolo Cancer Institute, the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Unit plays a central role in the care of cancer patients, following a multidisciplinary and highly specialized approach. The Unit’s activities are organized into three main areas: anesthesia, resuscitation, and long-term central venous catheter implantation.

The patient pathway is supported by Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, which aim to promote faster postoperative recovery, minimize complications, and improve overall quality of life.

Activities

Anesthesia

The team manages all anesthesiologic procedures required for surgical and interventional oncology procedures. The choice of anesthesia—general, locoregional, or plexus—is tailored to the patient’s clinical condition and shared with them.

Within the ERAS framework, particular attention is given to:

  • Optimized preoperative preparation, including patient education, reduced fasting times, and proper hydration;
  • Careful fluid management to prevent hydroelectrolyte imbalances;
  • Anesthetic techniques designed to minimize opioid use and enhance recovery.

Resuscitation and Post-Operative Intensive Care

The Unit provides intensive care and postoperative monitoring for the most complex patients, ensuring continuity of care during critical periods.

In line with ERAS principles, the focus includes:

  • Nutritional optimization with early resumption of oral feeding
  • Early mobilization, beginning within hours after surgery
  • Strategies to reduce respiratory and infectious complications

Long-Term Central Venous Access

Many cancer patients require stable and safe venous access for chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, or prolonged therapies. The Unit provides implantation and management of long-term central venous catheters, including Port-a-Cath and PICC lines, ensuring minimally invasive procedures that:

  • Promote continuity of care throughout treatment
  • Improve patient comfort
  • Reduce complications from repeated venous punctures
