Description
The Breast Unit at the Candiolo Institute is a Multidisciplinary Senology Center designed to accompany women with breast cancer at all stages of the treatment pathway. It is a highly effective model of care that is based on collaboration among specialized professionals and the application of the most up-to-date international guidelines.
A multidisciplinary team
The Breast Unit brings together several specialized teams working together:
- Gynecologic Oncology and Hereditary Tumors.
- Breast Surgery
- Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
- Interdisciplinary Care Group (ICG) for breast cancer
The team includes all specialists involved in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease: radiologists, breast and plastic surgeons, anatomic pathologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear physicians, psychologists, and experienced nurses. Together, they ensure a comprehensive and coordinated intake.
To further strengthen the quality of the pathway, the Breast Unit organizes periodic meetings with clinical and organizational audits, moments of structured confrontation that allow for continuous monitoring of results, evaluation of adherence to standards and improvement of the efficiency of teamwork.
Rapid pathway from diagnosis to surgery
One of the hallmarks of the Breast Unit at Candiolo is the fast-track pathway: from initial diagnosis to surgery takes less than two weeks. Quick and organized response to minimize waiting time and uncertainty.
Innovation and care
Thanks to state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and advanced surgical techniques, patients can rely on minimally invasive and robotic approaches, which allow extremely precise surgeries, reducing postoperative pain, hospital stay time, and functional and cosmetic recovery time.
The team works in synergy with the Institute’s researchers, enabling timely access to the latest innovations in cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Candiolo Institute is actively engaged in breast cancer research, with studies dedicated to new biological markers and advanced therapeutic strategies, particularly for hormone-responsive cancers. The goal is to offer more and more effective and personalized options.
Activities
The Breast Unit team accompanies each woman every step of the way:
- Diagnosis with imaging examinations and interventional diagnostics;
- surgery, with minimally invasive and robotic approaches and also with the possibility of immediate or subsequent breast reconstruction;
- morphological-histological and molecular characterization of the tumor for more targeted treatment;
- Personalized cancer therapy, chosen according to the type and stage of the disease;
- psycho-physical support, thanks to specialists dedicated to the well-being of the person;
- Regular follow-up, with scheduled checkups to monitor health status over time.
Outpatient clinic for high-risk women
There is also a dedicated outpatient clinic for women with a high familial or genetic risk of developing breast cancer, such as in cases of BRCA gene mutation. This allows for specific and personalized monitoring.
