Anesthesia and Resuscitation

Direttore: Dott. Alessandro Cerutti

Description

The Candiolo IRCCS Anesthesia and Resuscitation Operating Unit plays a key role in the care pathway of cancer patients, following a multidisciplinary and highly specialized approach.
Activities are divided into three main areas: anesthesia, resuscitation, and long-term central venous catheter implantation.

The entire pathway is supported by the adoption of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, which aim to promote faster postoperative recovery, reduce complications and improve patients’ quality of life.

Activities

Anesthesia

The team manages all anesthesiologic procedures required in surgical interventions and oncologic interventional procedures. The choice of technique (general, locoregional or plexus anesthesia) is always tailored to the clinical condition and shared with the patient.

Within the framework of ERAS protocols, special attention is paid to:

  • Optimized preoperative preparation (patient information, reduced fasting time, proper hydration);
  • Optimal fluid management to prevent hydroelectrolyte imbalances;
  • Implementation of anesthesiological techniques aimed at reducing opioid use.

Resuscitation and Post-Operative Intensive Care.

The Unit provides intensive care and postoperative monitoring for the most complex patients, ensuring continuity of care at the most delicate times.

In line with the ERAS approach, the following are promoted:

  • Nutritional optimization with early resumption of oral feeding;
  • Early mobilization of the patient as early as the first hours after surgery;
  • Strategies for reducing respiratory and infectious complications.

Long-term central venous accesses

For many cancer patients, stable and safe venous access is necessary, useful for administering chemotherapy drugs, parenteral nutrition, or prolonged therapies.
Our team provides implantation and management of long-term central venous catheters (such as Port-a-Cath and PICCs), ensuring safe and minimally invasive procedures. These devices improve patient comfort, reduce complications related to repeated venous punctures, and promote continuity of care.
