The Breast Unit at the Candiolo Cancer Institute is a Multidisciplinary Senology Center that supports women women with breast cancer throughout every stage of their treatment pathway. A Multidisciplinary Team
The Breast Unit brings together multiple specialized teams that collaborate closely to provide comprehensive care:
- Gynecologic Oncology and Hereditary Tumors
- Breast Surgery
- Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
- Interdisciplinary Care Group (ICG) for breast cancer
The Breast Unit at Candiolo Cancer Institute brings together all specialists involved in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, including radiologists, breast and plastic surgeons, anatomic pathologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear physicians, psychologists, and experienced nurses. Working collaboratively, the team ensures comprehensive and coordinated patient care.
To maintain and enhance the quality of the care pathway, the Breast Unit conducts regular multidisciplinary meetings and clinical audits. These structured reviews allow continuous monitoring of outcomes, evaluation of adherence to standards, and optimization of team efficiency.

A hallmark of the Breast Unit is its fast-track pathway: from initial diagnosis to surgery in under two weeks. This rapid, organized approach reduces waiting times and uncertainty for patients.

Activities
The Breast Unit supports each patient throughout their care pathway, including:

- surgery, with minimally invasive and robotic approaches and also with the possibility of immediate or subsequent breast reconstruction;
- Tumor characterization: Morphological, histological, and molecular analysis to guide targeted treatment;
- Personalized therapy: Treatment plans tailored to tumor type and stage;
- Psycho-physical support: Dedicated specialists addressing emotional and physical well-being;
- Follow-up care: Regular checkups to monitor health status over time.
Outpatient Clinic for High-Risk Women
The Institute also offers a dedicated outpatient clinic for women at high familial or genetic risk of developing breast cancer, such as those with BRCA gene mutations. This service provides personalized monitoring and tailored preventive strategies.
