Description
The Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit at IRCCS Candiolo is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, colorectum), liver, biliary tract and pancreas.
The facility performs more than 10,000 services per year and has state-of-the-art instruments with advanced imaging technologies-high-definition endoscopes and contrast techniques with vital or virtual coloring such as NBI and artificial intelligence-that ensure a high level of diagnostic accuracy. These systems enable early injury identification and early intervention.
Activities
Advanced diagnostics
Diagnostic procedures are generally performed under conscious sedation so as to ensure patient comfort and peace of mind. After the examination, each person is received in adedicated “recovery” area, with constant monitoring of vital signs and specialized nursing care. This ensures the best conditions of safety and well-being both before and after the procedure.
Minimally invasive endoscopic treatments
In addition to advanced diagnostics, the center also performs treatments for neoplastic and pre-neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract through minimally invasive techniques for resection of superficial lesions of the esophagus, stomach, and colorectum. The methods used include: EMR (mucosal resection), ESD (submucosal resection), EID, FTR (full-thickness resection), STER.
These are minimally invasive endoscopic procedures that are an effective alternative to traditional surgery in patients with intramucosal lesions without risk of lymph node metastasis. This offers a conservative but at the same time oncologically radical approach . The goal is to ensure personalized and minimally invasive care pathways, improving patients’ quality of life and ensuring comprehensive, multidisciplinary care.
Regarding biliopancreatic and gastrointestinal diseases, several advanced endoscopic procedures are performed, including:
- ERCP with biliary and pancreatic stent placement
- EUS (echoendoscopy), which allows high-precision diagnostic evaluation;
- Enteral stenting, useful in cases of bowel narrowing;
- Radiofrequency treatments for Barrett’s esophagus;
- Endoscopic dilatations for stenosis or narrowing of the digestive tract;
- Placement of PEG (gastrostomy) or PEJ (jejunostomy), to ensure adequate nutrition in patients who cannot feed naturally
