Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy

Director: Dr. Teresa Staiano

Description

The Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit at the Institute specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the digestive system—including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and colorectum, as well as the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas.

Performing over 10,000 procedures annually, the Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments featuring advanced imaging technologies, including high-definition endoscopes and enhanced contrast techniques such as NBI (narrow-band imaging) and artificial intelligence-assisted imaging, which ensure high diagnostic accuracy and early identification of lesions.

Activities

Advanced Diagnostics

Most diagnostic procedures are performed under conscious sedation to ensure patient comfort.

Post-procedure, patients are monitored in a dedicated recovery area with continuous vital sign checks and specialized nursing care, ensuring safety and well-being before and after the examination.

Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Treatments

The Unit performs minimally invasive treatments for neoplastic and pre-neoplastic gastrointestinal lesions, including:

  • EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection)
  • ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection)
  • EID (Endoscopic Intramural Dissection)
  • FTR (Full-Thickness Resection)
  • STER (Submucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection)

These procedures offer a conservative yet oncologically radical alternative to traditional surgery for patients with intramucosal lesions without lymph node involvement, promoting personalized, minimally invasive care while preserving quality of life.

Advanced Endoscopic Procedures

  • ERCP with biliary and pancreatic stent placement
  • EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound) for high-precision diagnostic evaluation
  • Enteral stenting for bowel obstruction
  • Radiofrequency ablation for Barrett’s esophagus
  • Endoscopic dilations for gastrointestinal strictures
  • PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) and PEJ (percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy) for nutritional support
