Description
The Health Physics Service at IRCCS Candiolo supports all health care activities involving the use of ionizing and nonionizing radiation in order to provide efficient and effective services to patients in compliance with national and international regulations in terms of quality and safety.
The staff works in interdisciplinary collaboration with different professionals in implementing and optimizing diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and outlining related procedures. It also contributes to solving complex problems in the field of high technology.
Activities
The basic services performed by Health Physics are:
- Development of personalized treatment plans of patients undergoing radiation therapy by advanced external irradiation techniques (VMAT, Tomotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery) to maximize the dose delivered to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues as much as possible;
- HDR brachytherapy treatment planning and radionuclide therapies;
- Measurement and evaluation of doses to patients;
- Physical radiation protection surveillance for workers and the public in the context of medical exposures;
- Quality control and verification of all equipment in use in Radiotherapy (linear accelerator, Tomotherapy), Nuclear Medicine (SPECT/CT, PET/CT, activity calibrators) and Radiodiagnostics (traditional radiology, mammography, MRI, CT, angiography);
- verification of radiotherapy treatment plans using independent calculation software and verification of dose delivered in vivo during irradiation using special volumetric and helical techniques.
