Oncologic Surgery

Director: Dr. Felice Borghi

Description

Oncologic Surgery at IRCCS Candiolo is a highly specialized unit dedicated to the surgical treatment of solid tumors. The main goal is the removal of the tumor mass, when possible, through interventions performed with modern and increasingly targeted techniques, while respecting the physical and psychological integrity of the patient.

Cancer surgeons specialize in treating cancers affecting esophagus, stomach, colorectum, anus, liver (primary and metastatic cancers), biliary tract, pancreas, adrenal, soft parts(sarcomas), and the peritoneum (carcinosis).
Each intervention is planned within a multidisciplinary pathway to ensure comprehensive patient care, coordinated with oncologists, radiologists, and other specialists involved in care.

Activities

The team deals with all phases of the surgical oncology pathway:

  • Diagnosis: Tumor identification through analysis of tissue samples (biopsy).
  • Staging: Assessment of disease spread to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.
  • Surgical therapy: Recommended when the tumor is localized and can be completely removed.
  • Prevention: Removal of pre-neoplastic lesions to prevent progression to malignancy.
  • Palliation: In selected cases, surgery aims to reduce tumor burden, relieve symptoms, and enhance the effectiveness of systemic therapies.
  • Patient-centered care: Protecting the patient’s physical and psychological well-being, particularly in major surgical procedures.

Cutting-Edge Surgical Techniques

At the Candiolo Cancer Institute, state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques and robotic platforms are employed to optimize surgical outcomes. Robotic surgery provides multiple advantages for both the surgeon and the patient:

  • Enhanced visualization: High-definition, three-dimensional views with magnification of anatomical structures.
  • Precision: Elimination of natural hand tremors, improving surgical accuracy.
  • Instrument flexibility: Greater range of motion and dexterity compared with conventional surgery.

These technologies enable more precise procedures, reduce invasiveness, and support faster postoperative recovery, ultimately enhancing patient care and overall well-being.
