Description
Oncologic Surgery at IRCCS Candiolo is a highly specialized unit dedicated to the surgical treatment of solid tumors. The main goal is the removal of the tumor mass, when possible, through interventions performed with modern and increasingly targeted techniques, while respecting the physical and psychological integrity of the patient.
Cancer surgeons specialize in treating cancers affecting esophagus, stomach, colorectum, anus, liver (primary and metastatic cancers), biliary tract, pancreas, adrenal, soft parts(sarcomas), and the peritoneum (carcinosis).
Each intervention is planned within a multidisciplinary pathway to ensure comprehensive patient care, coordinated with oncologists, radiologists, and other specialists involved in care.
Activities
The team deals with all phases of the surgical oncology pathway:
- Diagnosis: is made by analysis of a sample of tumor tissue (biopsy);
- staging: involves defining how far the disease has spread within the body so that the most appropriate treatment can be planned;
- Surgical therapy: is proposed when the tumor is localized and can be removed completely;
- Prevention: surgical removal of pre-neoplastic lesions is performed to prevent them from developing into tumors;
- palliation: in some cases, the intervention aims to reduce tumor volume, improve symptoms, and make systemic therapies more effective;
- Safeguarding the patient’s physical and psychological appearance, especially in cases of major surgery.
Cutting-edge surgical techniques
State-of-the-art minimally invasive approaches and robotic platforms are used at IRCCS Candiolo. Robotic surgery offers numerous advantages for both the surgeon and the patient:
- High-definition three-dimensional view of the surgical field, with magnification of anatomical structures;
- Reduction of the surgeon’s range of motion by cancellation of natural tremor;
- maximum flexibility of instruments, allowing greater freedom of movement than in traditional surgery.
These technologies allow for more precise interventions, less invasiveness, and faster postoperative recovery, improving quality of care and patient well-being.
