Description
The Hospital Pharmacy at IRCCS Candiolo Cancer Institute plays a central role in the care of cancer patients, ensuring that medications and medical devices are always available, safe, and used effectively.
The department combines clinical, technical, and logistical expertise to support patient care, clinical trials, and the safe management of all therapeutic products.
Activities
The Pharmacy’s activities focus primarily on the personalized preparation of oncology medications, including antineoplastic chemotherapeutics and supportive therapies. These drugs are produced in high-tech sterile environments within the dedicated Antiblastic Drugs Unit (UFA), where approximately 76,000 preparations are made each year, ensuring precision and quality at every stage. In addition, the Pharmacy produces non-sterile galenic formulations, such as creams, solutions, and mouthwashes, prepared according to physician prescriptions and regulatory standards.
The department also manages the procurement, storage, and distribution of drugs and medical devices throughout the hospital, supplying patients at discharge or after oncology consultations to maintain continuity of care at home. It plays a key role in clinical trials by managing experimental drugs and placebos in full compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), overseeing all stages from receipt and quality control to delivery to patients and return to study sponsors.
Safety and monitoring are central to the Pharmacy’s work, including oversight of all medications (including controlled substances) and devices, as well as management of Pharmacovigilance and Devicevigilance, collecting reports from healthcare personnel and forwarding them to AIFA or the Ministry of Health. To support quality of care, the department prepares regular reports on drug and device consumption and expenditure and manages the AIFA Oncology Drug Registry.
Finally, the Pharmacy is a center for training and education, providing daily and periodic updates to healthcare staff, patients, and caregivers on the proper use of drugs and devices, and collaborating with universities on dissertations, residency programs, and research projects.
