Radiation Therapy Division

Director: Dr. Marco Gatti

Description

The Division of Radiation Therapy provides state-of-the-art cancer treatments tailored to the specific characteristics of each patient and their disease. The availability of advanced technologies allows for high precision, increased effectiveness, and minimal impact on surrounding healthy organs.

What is Radiotherapy

Radiation therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses ionizing radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. It is typically performed on an outpatient basis, does not require hospitalization, is painless, and in most cases does not require anesthesia or special medications.

Treatment pathway

  • Consultation visit: The radiation oncologist evaluates the indication for treatment, explaining its objectives, duration, procedure, and possible side effects.
  • Simulation CT scan: The patient undergoes a CT scan that allows the physician to precisely delineate the tumor and nearby organs to be protected.
  • Treatment planning: Based on the simulation images, a personalized radiotherapy plan is developed.
  • Start of sessions: The number of treatments varies by the type of irradiation, ranging from 1–7 sessions for short courses, up to a maximum of 35 sessions for longer protocols. Individual sessions are brief.

After each session, the patient is not radioactive and can continue daily activities, including work, sports, or social commitments.

Side effects

Side effects, if present, are generally mild and manageable. They depend on the treated area, and the physician can prescribe medications or recommend strategies to alleviate any discomfort.

A Multidisciplinary Team

Radiation therapy is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that guides the patient through the entire treatment pathway:

  • Radiation oncologist: Defines the indication for treatment and supervises the entire course.
  • Health physicists: Develop individualized treatment plans based on imaging and clinical data; the oncologist selects the most suitable plan.
  • Radiation therapy technicians: Conduct the treatment sessions, ensuring accurate patient positioning and performing necessary quality controls.
  • Specialized nurses: Support patients during preparatory stages, assist during treatment, and manage medications or other clinical needs.

This team ensures that patients are accompanied at every stage, with clear explanations and careful monitoring of potential side effects.

Activities

The Division offers a range of advanced radiotherapy techniques, including:

  • 3D Conformal Radiotherapy (3DCRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) with daily Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), delivered using two tomotherapy devices, a feature unique in the Piedmont region.
  • Stereotactic radiotherapy delivered by LINAC TRUE BEAM.
  • High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy for targeted internal radiation treatments.
