Description
Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the Candiolo Cancer Institute is dedicated to restoring the physical and functional integrity of cancer patients following demolitive surgery. The aim is to improve quality of life while minimizing the aesthetic and psychological impact of the disease.
Plastic and reconstructive surgery works closely with other operating units involved in the patient’s care, playing a key role in the multidisciplinary treatment pathway.
Activities
Specialists deal with:
- Post-oncologic breast reconstruction, performed either immediately alongside tumor-removal surgery or as a delayed procedure
- Reconstruction of cancer surgery in other body regions, including head and neck, limbs, trunk, and genital area
- Follow-up care through regular postoperative visits to monitor outcomes and recovery
Techniques
The team employs advanced reconstructive methods, such as:
- Autologous tissue reconstruction, including free, perforator, and pedicled flaps
- Use of prosthetic materials when appropriate
- Skin grafting for tissue replacement and coverage
These approaches enable the restoration of body volume and contour, improving both function and appearance while supporting the patient’s overall well-being.
