Urological Oncology Surgery

Director: Prof. Francesco Porpiglia

Description

The Department of Urological Oncology Surgery at the Candiolo Cancer Institute focuses on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neoplastic diseases of the urinary and male genital system, with particular expertise in prostate, kidney, bladder, testicular, and adrenal tumors.

The department works in close collaboration with Medical Oncology, Radiation Therapy, Radiodiagnostics, Nuclear Medicine, and Pathologic Anatomy, ensuring an integrated and personalized diagnostic and therapeutic pathway for each patient. Clinical decisions are made within multidisciplinary meetings, aiming to provide timely, appropriate surgical care in line with the highest international standards.

Advanced Surgical Techniques

Specialists employ state-of-the-art minimally invasive and robotic techniques, which offer several advantages over traditional surgery:

  • Reduced operative time
  • Increased precision in tissue dissection
  • Preservation of nerve structures critical for urinary continence and sexual function
  • Lower risk of bleeding and infections
  • Improved aesthetic outcomes with smaller scars

HIFU Technology for Prostate Treatment

The Institute also offers High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for localized prostate tumors or for patients not suitable for radical surgery. This technique uses focused ultrasound to selectively destroy tumor tissue while preserving surrounding healthy structures, minimizing impact on urinary and sexual function.
