Description
The Department of Urological Surgery at IRCCS Candiolo is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neoplastic diseases of the urinary and male genital system, with special reference to prostate tumors, kidney tumors, bladder tumors, testicular tumors, and adrenal tumors.
The department operates in close synergy with the Units of Medical Oncology, Radiation Therapy, Radiodiagnostics, Nuclear Medicine and Pathologic Anatomy, ensuring an integrated and personalized diagnostic-therapeutic pathway for each patient. Clinical decisions are shared in multidisciplinary meetings with the goal of ensuring appropriate, timely surgical oncology treatments aligned with the highest international standards.
Advanced surgical techniques
The department’s specialists perform surgeries by adopting state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques and robotic platforms, which allow numerous advantages over traditional surgery:
- Reduction of operator time;
- Greater accuracy in tissue dissection;
- preservation of nerve structures involved in urinary continence and sexual function;
- Lower risk of bleeding and infectious complications;
- Better aesthetic outcomes, with smaller scars.
HIFU technology for prostate treatment
The Institute also has the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technique for the treatment of prostate tumors that are localized or not candidates for radical surgery. This method employs high-intensity focused ultrasound to selectively destroy tumor tissue while preserving surrounding healthy structures and minimizing the impact on urinary and sexual function.
